Where did the word nicotine come from?
The word nicotine comes from Jean Nicot de Villemain, a French diplomat who introduced tobacco to the French royal court in 1560. Nicot believed tobacco had medicinal properties and sent samples to the Queen of France. The plant was eventually named Nicotiana tabacum in his honor, and the compound nicotine followed.
